Your vehicle is your workshop
Most Australian tradies spend more time working out of a vehicle than a workshop. A good fit-out saves fifteen minutes a day, which is more than a week of working hours a year.
Start with weight, because it is a legal issue
Every vehicle has a Gross Vehicle Mass, and a fully kitted ute with a canopy, drawers, a generator and a full water tank can exceed it surprisingly easily.
Exceeding GVM affects handling and braking, and can void insurance in the event of an accident. Weigh your loaded vehicle at a public weighbridge — most tradies who do this are surprised by the result.
- Heavy items forward and low, over or ahead of the rear axle
- Nothing heavy at the rear overhang — it lightens the front and ruins steering
- Everything restrained — an unsecured toolbox is a projectile in a crash
Canopy, tub liner or van?
| Setup | Strengths | Weaknesses |
|---|---|---|
| Open tub + toolboxes | Cheap, flexible, carries bulky material | Weather, theft, dust |
| Canopy on tray | Secure, dry, drawer systems fit well | Cost, weight, less bulky capacity |
| Van | Best security and weather, shelving on both walls | No open load space, height restrictions |
| Ute + trailer | Separates tools from materials | Parking, reversing, another registration |
Whatever you build, make sure you can reach the tools you use most without climbing into the vehicle. That is the fit-out that survives contact with reality.
Security: assume it will be targeted
Tool theft from vehicles is common in every Australian capital. Layers work better than any single measure:
- Quality locks — not the ones supplied with the box. Concealed hinges and anti-jemmy edges matter more than the padlock.
- Do not advertise — brand decals tell thieves exactly what is inside.
- Park sensibly — reverse against a wall so doors cannot open, lit areas, off the street where possible.
- Empty overnight where you can. It is annoying and it works.
- Register serial numbers — see tool theft prevention.
Dust and water
Australian conditions punish poor sealing. Bull dust gets into everything on rural work, and coastal humidity corrodes exposed steel.
Rubber door seals degrade — check them yearly. Drainage points matter as much as seals: water will get in eventually, and it needs somewhere to go other than sitting under a drawer.
Modular systems that actually work in a vehicle
PACKOUT, TOUGHSYSTEM and MAKPAC racking mounts let you lock boxes to the vehicle and lift out only what a job needs. That is the real benefit — not the storage, the selective removal.
Combine with drawers for consumables and a dedicated charging point. Browse tool boxes and chests.
Power in the vehicle
A dual battery system with an inverter lets you charge tool batteries between jobs, which for many tradies removes the need for a generator entirely. See batteries and chargers and remember the golden rule: never store batteries in a hot tray.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my ute is overweight?
Load it as you normally work and visit a public weighbridge. Compare against the GVM on the compliance plate.
Are aluminium canopies worth the extra cost?
Usually. The weight saving directly increases your payload, which matters more than the purchase price over the vehicle’s life.
What is the best way to charge batteries in a vehicle?
A dual battery system with a pure sine wave inverter. Charge while driving, not while parked in the sun.
