Carrying tools badly is a career-length injury risk
A badly loaded belt puts asymmetric load on one hip and lower back for eight hours a day, five days a week. Most tradies discover this the hard way in their forties. Browse tool bags and pouches.
Belt, bag or backpack?
| Format | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Tool belt / rig | Carpenters, framers — tools in hand constantly | Load on hips and back, awkward in confined spaces |
| Open tote bag | Quick access, general site work | Contents get wet, tools tangle |
| Closed tool bag | Electricians, plumbers, service work | Slower access, but organised and weatherproof |
| Backpack | Ladder work, multi-storey, walking sites | Weight distributed properly; slower to access |
| Rolling case | Heavy kits, service vans, flat sites | Useless on stairs and rough ground |
Setting up a carpenter’s rig
The principle is balance and reach. Heavy items low and centred, frequently used items on your dominant side, and nothing hanging where it swings into your knee.
- Padded belt first — a wide padded belt with suspenders transfers load off your hips onto your shoulders
- Nail bag on the dominant side, hammer loop just behind it
- Tape, pencil, knife in the front pouches where you reach without looking
- Impact driver holster on the dominant hip, angled so it does not catch on ladders
- Nothing on the back — you will sit on it or lean against it
Empty your belt every Friday. You will find two kilos of things you have not used in a month.
Why Veto Pro Pac has a cult following
Veto Pro Pac bags use injection-moulded semi-rigid panels so the bag holds its shape and stands upright, with vertical tool pockets you can see into at a glance.
The waterproof moulded base is the other differentiator — the bag can sit in mud or a wet slab without soaking the contents. They are expensive and they routinely last a decade.
Toughbuilt offers a modular ClipTech system at a much lower price point, and Milwaukee’s PACKOUT bags integrate with the wider PACKOUT system — a strong argument if you already own PACKOUT boxes.
Trade-specific notes
- Electricians — a closed bag with vertical pockets for screwdrivers and testers; keep VDE tools separate and protected.
- Plumbers — heavier tools mean a reinforced base and shoulder strap; expect the bag to get wet, so plan for drainage.
- Carpenters — a belt for framing, a tote for fit-out. Most carry both and switch.
- Service techs — a backpack or rolling case with a laptop compartment and hard-sided instrument protection.
Buy for the tools you carry, not the tools you own
The most common mistake is buying an enormous bag and filling it. Weight accumulates invisibly and you end up carrying a full kit to every job.
Work out the ten tools you use on 90% of jobs, size the bag for those, and keep the rest in the vehicle.

Frequently asked questions
Are suspenders worth it with a tool belt?
Absolutely. They move load from your hips to your shoulders and are the single best thing you can do for your back.
Is Veto Pro Pac worth the money?
If you carry tools daily, the organisation and lifespan justify it. For occasional use it is hard to justify.
Leather or synthetic tool belt?
Leather moulds to you and lasts decades but is heavy and hates rain. Synthetic is lighter, cheaper and dries out — most modern rigs are synthetic.
