Workwear here has a harder job
Australian outdoor work combines extreme UV, heat that regularly exceeds 35°C, and abrasive site conditions. Workwear designed for a European winter simply does not translate.

Sun protection is occupational, not optional
Australia has among the highest skin cancer rates in the world, and outdoor workers carry a significantly elevated occupational risk. Long sleeves in summer feel counter-intuitive and are the correct answer.
- UPF 50+ rated fabric — a rating, not a marketing claim. Check the label
- Long sleeves and collars in lightweight breathable weaves rather than short sleeves
- Wide-brim hat or a legionnaire flap — a cap leaves ears and neck exposed, which is where lesions commonly appear
- Wraparound safety glasses with UV rating — eyes and eyelids need protection too
- Sunscreen on anything still exposed, reapplied through the day
A lightweight UPF 50+ long sleeve shirt is cooler in direct Australian sun than a t-shirt. The fabric blocks radiant heat before it reaches your skin.
Managing heat
Heat stress is a genuine site hazard, and clothing is one of the few things you control directly.
- Moisture-wicking synthetics or blends move sweat to the surface where it evaporates
- Ventilation panels under the arms and across the back make a measurable difference
- Loose fit allows airflow; tight clothing traps heat against the skin
- Light colours reflect radiant heat
- Cooling towels and neck wraps are cheap and genuinely effective on extreme days
Hi-vis and the Australian standard
High-visibility clothing in Australia is covered by AS/NZS 4602.1, which defines day, night and day/night classes.
| Class | When | Requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Class D | Daytime only | Fluorescent background material |
| Class N | Night only | Retroreflective tape |
| Class D/N | Day and night | Both — the usual site requirement |
Fluorescent fabric fades with UV exposure and washing. A faded hi-vis shirt no longer meets the standard, however comfortable it has become. Replace it.
Trousers and knee protection
Kneeling work destroys knees over a career. Trousers with proper knee pad pockets, and CE-rated inserts, are far better than strap-on pads that slide and cut off circulation.
Look for reinforced fabric at the knees and cuffs, and enough pocket capacity that you are not carrying everything on a belt. See tool belts and bags.
Boots
AS/NZS 2210.3 covers safety footwear. Composite toe caps are lighter than steel and, importantly in Australia, do not conduct heat or cold — a real comfort difference on a hot slab.
Look also for a penetration-resistant midsole if you work around nails and mesh, slip resistance, and a lace or zip system you can actually manage. Two pairs rotated daily last considerably more than twice as long as one pair worn every day.
Wet season and cold mornings
Northern Australia adds humidity and monsoonal rain; southern winters bring genuinely cold starts. Layering beats a single heavy garment in both cases, because sites warm up quickly and a garment you cannot remove is worse than no garment.
A lightweight breathable rain shell that packs down small is worth carrying year-round.

Frequently asked questions
Is long sleeve really cooler than short sleeve in the sun?
In direct sun, yes. Lightweight breathable fabric blocks radiant heat and holds a layer of cooler air against the skin.
How often should hi-vis be replaced?
When the fluorescent colour has visibly faded or the reflective tape is cracking. Faded hi-vis no longer meets AS/NZS 4602.1.
Are composite toe boots as safe as steel?
Yes, when certified to AS/NZS 2210.3. They are lighter and do not conduct temperature, which matters a lot in Australian conditions.
