The cheapest tool that ruins the most work
Nobody thinks hard about a tape measure until a cabinet does not fit. Tapes vary far more than people assume, in accuracy, in durability, and in how usable they are one-handed. Browse tape measures.
Standout: the spec that matters most
Standout is how far the blade extends horizontally before it buckles. It is the difference between measuring a ceiling on your own and needing a second person.
Cheap tapes manage around 1.5–2 m. Good tapes reach 3–4 m. Premium wide-blade tapes can exceed 4 m. Standout comes from blade width and the curve profile — a wider, more curved blade is stiffer.
| Blade width | Typical standout | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| 16 mm | 1.5–2.5 m | Compact, light, fits a pocket easily |
| 25 mm | 2.5–3.5 m | The standard trade compromise |
| 27–32 mm | 3.5–4.5 m+ | Best standout, bulkier case and heavier |
Accuracy classes
Quality tapes are marked with an EC accuracy class. Class I is the tightest tolerance, Class II is the normal trade standard, and unclassed tapes have no guaranteed accuracy at all.
Over 5 m the difference between classes is a couple of millimetres. That is irrelevant for framing and very relevant for joinery.
Use the same tape for the whole job. Two tapes from different makers can disagree by more than your tolerance.
The hook is not loose — it is meant to move
The end hook slides by exactly the thickness of the hook itself. That compensates for whether you are pushing the tape against something (inside measurement) or hooking it over an edge (outside measurement).
If the hook is bent or the rivets are loose, that compensation is wrong and every measurement is off. Check it against a known dimension occasionally, and replace the tape if the hook is damaged.
Blade coatings and durability
The first 150 mm of blade takes almost all the wear because it is repeatedly extended and retracted. Premium tapes use nylon or polymer coatings, often doubled on that leading section.
Look also for a blade brake that actually holds, a case that survives a drop from scaffold height, and a belt clip that does not snap off in the first month.
Features worth having
- Magnetic hook — invaluable for steel work, less so for carpenters
- Double-sided printing — read the blade from underneath without twisting
- Stud markings at 450/600 mm — matched to Australian framing centres
- Fractional or metric-only — metric-only blades are less cluttered and easier to read quickly
- Finger brake — controlled retraction rather than a blade whipping back
Time for a new tape?

Frequently asked questions
What length tape should I buy?
8 m covers almost all trade work. 5 m is handier in a pocket for fit-out, and 10 m is worth having for setting out.
Why do my tape and my colleague’s tape disagree?
Different accuracy classes, a bent hook, or blade wear. On precision work, everyone should use the same tape.
Are magnetic hooks worth it?
For steel framing, HVAC and metal fabrication, yes. On timber they add nothing and attract swarf.
