Spirit Levels: Accuracy Ratings and Why Stabila Costs More

What mm/m accuracy really means, why premium vials do not drift, and how to check the level you already own in ten seconds.

Spirit Level Accuracy: In this guide

  • Accuracy is a specification, not a feeling
  • Why the expensive ones cost more
  • Box section or I-beam?
  • What lengths do you actually need?
  • Digital and laser alternatives

Accuracy is a specification, not a feeling

Spirit level accuracy is quoted in millimetres per metre. A level rated 0.5 mm/m can be out by 0.5 mm over every metre of its length — so a 1.8 m level could be nearly 1 mm out end to end, and that error compounds as you leapfrog up a wall.

Rating Grade Suits
0.29 mm/m Premium Cabinetry, machinery, precision setting out
0.5 mm/m Professional General building and carpentry
0.75–1.0 mm/m Standard / DIY Hanging shelves, general household work

Most premium levels also quote a second figure for the inclined position, which is always slightly worse. Browse spirit levels.

Why the expensive ones cost more

The vial is the level. On a premium level the vial is set into the body with epoxy after the extrusion has been machined flat, and it is not adjustable — because it does not need to be.

Cheap levels use a vial pressed into a plastic housing that is clipped into the frame. It shifts. That is the entire difference, and it is why a $30 level can be accurate on day one and useless a year later.

  • Machined measuring surface — the base is milled flat, not just extruded
  • Shock-absorbing end caps — the most common way a level gets knocked out of true is being dropped on its end
  • Non-adjustable epoxied vials — sealed permanently, cannot drift
  • Rare-earth magnets on magnetic models, strong enough to hold on steel in wind

Check your level by taking a reading, then rotating it 180 degrees end for end. If the bubble reads differently, the level is out.

Box section or I-beam?

Box section is more rigid and much more resistant to twisting — the right choice for long levels and site abuse. I-beam is lighter and cheaper, and fine for shorter levels used carefully.

For anything 1.2 m and longer, box section is worth the extra weight.

What lengths do you actually need?

  • 230–400 mm torpedo — plumbing, electrical, tight spaces. Magnetic is essential here.
  • 600 mm — the everyday level. Most used size for most trades.
  • 1200 mm — door frames, cabinetry, general setting out.
  • 1800–2400 mm — walls, frames, long runs. Awkward but irreplaceable.

Digital and laser alternatives

Digital levels give a numeric angle readout, which is genuinely useful for matching an existing slope or setting a specific fall on drainage. They still need calibration and they need batteries.

For long distances and multiple points, a laser level beats any spirit level. Most tradies carry both — the laser sets the datum, the spirit level checks the detail.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check if my level is accurate?

Place it on a flat surface, note the bubble, then rotate it 180 degrees in the same spot. The reading must be identical.

Is a digital level more accurate?

Not necessarily. It is more precise at reporting an angle, but a quality vial level is at least as accurate at determining true level.

Are magnetic levels worth it?

For steel framing, plumbing and electrical work, absolutely — they free both hands.
