Site Lighting: Lumens, Runtime and Colour Temperature

Published 8 September 2026 4 min read By admin

Site Lighting Guide — a practical guide for Australian trades from the team at Power Tools Direct Australia.

Lumens, colour temperature, glare and IP ratings — how to light a site properly instead of buying the biggest number on the box.

Site Lighting Guide: In this guide

  • Bad light costs you money
  • How many lumens do you need?
  • Colour temperature matters more than people expect
  • Glare is the hidden problem
  • IP ratings and durability

Bad light costs you money

Poor lighting causes measurement errors, poor finishes and accidents. It is also the easiest thing on a site to fix cheaply.

Browse work lights and torches.

How many lumens do you need?

Application Lumens Type
Inspection, cavity work 200–800 Penlight, headlamp
Task lighting at a bench 1,000–2,000 Compact area light
Room lighting during fit-out 3,000–6,000 Tripod or stand light
Large area / night works 10,000–20,000+ Tower or high-output flood

Lumens are advertised at maximum output, which is also maximum battery drain. A light quoting 6,000 lumens and four hours runtime is almost certainly quoting those figures on different settings.

Colour temperature matters more than people expect

  • 3000K (warm) — comfortable, but poor at revealing detail and colour
  • 4000K (neutral) — good general working light, easy on the eyes over long periods
  • 5000–6500K (daylight) — best for detail, colour matching and painting. Can feel harsh in an enclosed space

For finishing trades — painting, tiling, cabinetry — daylight temperature with a high CRI (colour rendering index above 80) is worth seeking out. It is the difference between spotting a defect on site and spotting it when the client does.

Glare is the hidden problem

A bare high-output LED pointed at a work area creates hard shadows and blinds anyone facing it. Diffused area lights, or bouncing light off a ceiling, produce far better working conditions than raw output figures suggest.

This is why 4,000 well-diffused lumens often works better than 8,000 focused ones.

Two medium lights placed well beat one enormous light every time. Shadows are the enemy, not darkness.

IP ratings and durability

IP ratings tell you dust and water resistance. IP54 handles dust and splashes — fine for most indoor sites. IP65 or above handles hosing and driving rain, which matters for external work and wash-down areas.

Impact resistance matters just as much. Site lights get knocked over. Look for polycarbonate lenses and a genuinely stable base or a solid hook and magnet arrangement.

Battery, corded or hybrid?

Hybrid lights that run from either a battery or mains are the most practical choice for site work. Run on mains where power exists, switch to battery where it does not, with no second purchase.

On battery, a big area light will empty a 5.0Ah pack fast. Factor lighting into your battery planning — many tradies keep older, tired packs specifically for lights.

Working into the evening?

Area lights, tripods, torches and headlamps from Milwaukee, Makita, DeWalt and Unilite.

Frequently asked questions

Are cheap LED floodlights good enough?

For occasional use, sometimes. On site they fail quickly — the drivers and seals are where the cost is cut, not the LEDs.

What is a good all-round site light?

A 3,000–5,000 lumen hybrid area light at around 4000K with a tripod mount covers most trades.

Do work lights drain batteries quickly?

High-output modes do. Most lights have low modes that run for many hours, and older batteries are ideal for lighting duty.
