Screwdrivers: Why Wera and Vessel Cost More

Published 8 September 2026 4 min read By admin

Best Screwdrivers — a practical guide for Australian trades from the team at Power Tools Direct Australia.

Tip hardening, Lasertip, JIS vs Phillips and handle geometry — the details that separate a driver you keep from one you replace.

Best Screwdrivers: In this guide

  • A screwdriver is a torque transfer device
  • The tip is the whole tool
  • JIS vs Phillips: a real problem
  • Handles matter more than people admit
  • VDE for electrical work

A screwdriver is a torque transfer device

Everything about a good screwdriver is aimed at getting torque from your hand into the screw without slipping and without your wrist giving out. Cheap drivers fail at both. Browse screwdrivers.

The tip is the whole tool

Premium manufacturers harden the tip separately from the shaft, so the tip resists wear while the shaft retains some toughness and does not shatter.

Wera goes further with Lasertip — a laser-applied hard coating that bites into the screw recess and dramatically reduces cam-out. It is not marketing; you feel it immediately on a tight screw.
Vessel, the Japanese maker, takes a different route with very precisely ground tips and JIS-compatible profiles, which matters enormously if you work on Japanese machinery or appliances.

JIS vs Phillips: a real problem

Japanese Industrial Standard cross-head screws look like Phillips but have a slightly different geometry. A Phillips driver in a JIS screw sits too shallow and cams out, chewing the head.

If you service Japanese equipment, mowers, motorcycles or electronics, a set of JIS drivers will save you constant frustration.

Handles matter more than people admit

  • Diameter — a fat handle delivers more torque; a slim one gives more control and access
  • Multi-component grips — hard core for torque, soft zones for comfort and grip
  • Anti-roll features — a flat or hexagonal section stops the driver rolling off a roof
  • Rotating cap — lets you push with your palm while turning with your fingers, which is how you drive long screws
  • Hex bolster — a spanner flat near the tip for applying serious torque to seized screws

If your hand hurts after a day of screwdriving, the handle is wrong for you. Try one in your hand before committing to a set.

VDE for electrical work

Insulated screwdrivers are individually tested at 10,000 V and rated for 1,000 V working. Slimline VDE drivers are worth seeking out for modern switchboards where insulation bulk stops you reaching the terminal.

Sets or singles?

Buy a small quality set covering the sizes you use daily — typically PH1, PH2, PZ1, PZ2 and two or three flat sizes — then add specialist sizes individually as jobs demand.

A large cheap set is worse value than six good drivers. For occasional odd sizes, a ratcheting bit driver with a quality bit set covers everything without the drawer clutter.

Precision and stubby drivers

A precision set with rotating caps handles electronics, appliances and small fittings. Stubby drivers solve access problems nothing else will — behind appliances, inside cabinets, under dashboards.

Both are cheap and both are the tool you eventually wish you had brought.

Frequently asked questions

Is a ratcheting bit driver as good as fixed drivers?

For most work, yes, and it is far more compact. Fixed drivers are more rigid and better for very high torque or delicate precision.

What is Lasertip?

A laser-applied hard coating on the tip that increases friction inside the screw recess, substantially reducing cam-out.

Do I need JIS drivers?

Only if you work on Japanese-manufactured equipment. If you do, they immediately solve a problem you may have blamed on cheap screws.
