Pliers are where cheap tools show up fastest
A cheap plier has soft jaws that round off, a pivot that develops play, and cutting edges that dent instead of cutting. You notice all three within weeks. Browse pliers and cutters.
The core set
- Combination pliers — gripping, twisting, light cutting. The single most useful plier.
- Side cutters (diagonal cutters) — clean cutting of wire and cable ties. Flush-cut versions for electronics.
- Long nose / needle nose — reaching into enclosures, forming loops on terminals.
- Water pump pliers — adjustable jaws for pipe and fittings. Push-button adjustment is far better than slip-joint.
- Locking pliers (vice grips) — clamping, and removing rounded fasteners.
- Cable cutters — for anything over a few square millimetres. Never use side cutters on heavy cable.
- Wire strippers — self-adjusting types save real time on repetitive work.
What VDE actually certifies
VDE insulated tools are individually tested to withstand 10,000 volts and rated for working on live circuits up to 1,000 V AC. Every single tool is tested, not just a sample from the batch.
The double-layer insulation is deliberate: the bright inner colour shows through if the outer layer is damaged, which is your signal to bin the tool.
VDE tools are consumables with a long life. If the inner colour is showing, the tool is no longer rated — replace it, do not tape it.
Why Knipex costs what it does
Knipex makes almost nothing but pliers, and it shows in three places:
- Induction-hardened cutting edges — around 60+ HRC, so they cut piano wire without denting
- Precisely fitted pivots — no play, smooth action, and it stays that way for years
- Purpose-designed specialities — Cobra water pump pliers and Pliers Wrench genuinely do things other tools cannot
Bahco is the value-focused alternative with strong ergonomics, and Wiha is excellent on the electrical side. All three are a different category to hardware-store pliers.
Pliers Wrench: the tool people do not know they need
A Pliers Wrench has smooth parallel jaws that grip like an adjustable spanner but adjust like pliers. It tightens fittings without marking chrome, adjusts instantly to any size, and replaces a stack of spanners in a bag.
For plumbers and anyone working on finished fittings, it is one of the highest-value single purchases available.
Looking after them
- Never use pliers as a hammer or a pry bar — that is how pivots develop play
- A drop of oil on the pivot occasionally keeps the action smooth
- Do not cut hardened material with standard cutters; use dedicated hard-wire cutters
- Keep VDE tools separate and inspect the insulation before every live job

Frequently asked questions
Do I legally need VDE tools?
If you work on or near live low-voltage circuits in Australia, insulated tools rated to 1,000 V are the expected standard of care.
Are Knipex worth three times the price?
For daily professional use, yes — edge retention and pivot life are dramatically better. For occasional use, mid-range tools are fine.
Can I sharpen plier cutting edges?
Not really. The induction-hardened edge is thin and specifically profiled; sharpening removes the hardened layer.
