FlexVolt lets one DeWalt battery run both 18V and 54V tools. Here is how it works, what it costs, and when it genuinely beats a standard XR pack.

The idea behind FlexVolt
DeWalt FlexVolt batteries physically reconfigure their cells depending on the tool they are inserted into. Drop one into an 18V XR drill and it behaves as an 18V pack. Drop the same battery into a 54V mitre saw and it delivers 54V.
It is a genuinely clever bit of engineering, and it solves a real problem: adding high-demand tools without starting a second battery ecosystem.
What runs on 54V
- 305 mm slide mitre saws that previously needed mains power
- Table saws and large circular saws
- SDS Max rotary hammers and breakers
- M-class dust extractors
- See the full mitre and table saw range
The trade-offs nobody mentions
FlexVolt packs are physically larger and heavier than standard XR batteries. On a compact drill that changes the balance considerably — most people keep a couple of small XR packs for light work and reserve FlexVolt for the heavy tools.
They also cost more. If you never plan to buy a 54V tool, a standard XR 5.0Ah pack is the cheaper and lighter choice.
| Scenario | Best battery choice |
|---|---|
| 18V tools only | Standard XR 5.0Ah |
| 18V tools plus one 54V saw | Two FlexVolt packs plus small XR packs |
| Heavy 54V use daily | Multiple FlexVolt 9.0Ah/12.0Ah |
FlexVolt makes most sense when you are replacing a corded tool with a cordless one — that is where the 54V capability earns its keep.

Frequently asked questions
Do FlexVolt batteries work in old DeWalt 18V tools?
Yes, in DeWalt’s 18V XR sliding-pack tools. They will not fit older stem-style 18V NiCd tools.
Is FlexVolt the same as 20V Max?
20V Max is DeWalt’s North American marketing name for the same 18V platform sold here. FlexVolt sits on top of it.
Are FlexVolt batteries heavy?
Noticeably. A 9.0Ah FlexVolt is roughly double the weight of a 2.0Ah XR pack, which matters on overhead work.
