The tool you buy last and use constantly

An oscillating multi tool vibrates a blade through a tiny arc, tens of thousands of times a minute. It sounds unimpressive and it is the tool that solves problems no other tool can touch.

Flush-cutting a door jamb, removing grout, cutting a socket opening in fitted plasterboard, trimming a pipe against a wall — see the multi tool range.

What it is genuinely good at

  • Flush and plunge cuts where no other blade can reach
  • Cutting into finished surfaces without damaging what is around them
  • Grout and adhesive removal with a carbide rasp or segment blade
  • Precise repairs — cutting out a damaged section of skirting or floorboard
  • Detail sanding into corners with the delta pad

What it is bad at

Volume. A multi tool cuts slowly and generates a lot of vibration through your hands. If you are cutting more than a metre of anything, there is a better tool. It is a precision problem-solver, not a production tool.

Blade fittings: the important bit

For years every brand used a different arbor, and then most standardised on a universal star pattern. Then Bosch and Fein introduced Starlock.

Fitting What it means
Universal / OIS Fits most brands. Cheapest and most widely available blades.
Starlock 3D interlocking fit, better torque transfer. Fits Starlock tools.
StarlockPlus / StarlockMax Higher power ratings. Max blades need a Max tool; smaller blades fit larger tools, not vice versa.

Practically: a tool with a universal fitting gives you the cheapest blade supply. A Starlock tool grips better and is worth it if you use the tool heavily. Check what fitting your existing blades use before switching platforms.

The tool is cheap and the blades are not. Budget for blades as an ongoing cost, and buy bi-metal rather than the cheapest carbon steel.

Blades worth having

  • Bi-metal plunge blade — cuts timber with embedded nails. The most useful single blade.
  • Wood-only blade — faster in clean timber, will ruin itself on a nail.
  • Carbide segment blade — grout, tile adhesive, hard materials.
  • Scraper — old adhesive, silicone, paint.
  • Browse multi tool blades.

Features that matter

  • Tool-free blade change — non-negotiable now. Hex key blade changes are miserable.
  • Variable speed — low speed for scraping and plastics, high for cutting.
  • Brushless motor — noticeably better runtime, and multi tools are hard on batteries.
  • Vibration control — the difference between a tolerable hour and hand fatigue.

Frequently asked questions

Are cheap multi tool blades worth it?

Bulk bi-metal packs are fine for rough work. For nail-embedded timber and tile, spend on carbide — the difference in life is enormous.

Will Starlock blades fit my old tool?

No. Starlock blades need a Starlock interface. Universal blades fit universal tools.

Corded or cordless multi tool?

Cordless, almost always. This is a tool used in awkward places for short bursts, which is exactly where a cord is worst.
